Chapters 3 and 4

Chapter three discusses the importance of making math into solving problems. I agree with the textbook because every time I am posed with a problem that does not let me understand something, I have to find the solution. So, I feel that this can help students. I understand that the work has to be interesting for them in order for them to want to investigate and find a solution. Otherwise, they will look at it not only as boring work, but they will not find any relation to them and that is what counts! I am glad that the chapter states how hard this is because it is not just teachers making up an activity that will make the students work on their own and let them figure out a solution to the problem given to them. Contrary to that view, teachers have to be ten steps ahead and prepared with questions that are require them to highly analyze the problem that is being presented to them. Also, the students’ answers must come with an explanation as to how they got it, or why it is correct. Chapter four deals with preparing to make the classroom problem-based. This chapter gives details about how hard it actually is to plan for meaningful lessons. It is great that it provides steps into a flow map so that it is easier to see how this plan works. Then, it separates it into parts to describe each section of the plan. I liked how this is set up because it includes information on what to consider when making assessments that will work to the benefits of the students and the teachers. Also, the tasks that are needed to keep the lesson flowing and catch the attention of the class. I think this is one of the most important and difficult parts of the plan, because every student is different and teachers still have to think of a way to keep them “awake” during the entire activity. Plus, you need enough time to ask for questions or approaches by the students which can take a long time. A lot of their ideas are important and useful, so this is definitely something to dedicate time to. A good thing about the chapter is the scenarios that are created to paint a picture in my head of how to work through the plan with the use of the strategies that are offered as well.
